Camellia left Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge early last week and headed north to the Lynnhaven River. He flew to Lake Whitehurst on September 7th (Wednesday) which borders the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. None of the GPS points indicate the eagle returned to the nest. Camellia spent 2 days on Lake Whitehurst before heading east to Little Creek Reservoir where he spent September 9th -11th. He spent the evening of September 11 on the Eastern Branch of the Elizabeth River near Challedon Dr. The last transmitter location (white arrow) indicates he’s still in the same section of river through last night.
Camellia leaves Back Bay and heads north to Lynnhaven, Whitehurst, Little Creek Reservoir, and E Branch Elizabeth River.
Camellia visited Lake Whitehurst which borders the Norfolk Botanical Gardens.
Last week we left off with Azalea 1 mile from the Langley AFB runway. She left the area quickly on September 4th making a beeline north over Harwoods Mill Reservoir in Newport News and crossing the York River just downstream of the Coleman Bridge (Rt 17). She travelled an average of 10 miles an hour, quite the leisurely pace for an eagle which have been tracked up to 90 miles and hour during migration (Harmata 1982). The evening of September 4th she roosted in a stand of pines between the towns of Hartfield and Wake in Middlesex County, VA. The next morning she continued north crossing the Rappahannock River downstream of the Norris Bridge (Rt 3). Currently her activities center around Lymer and Indian Creeks in Lancaster County. Both creeks discharge out into Fleets Bay, and area with shallow bottoms which provide numerous fishing opportunities for the eagle.

Seems so fitting that Camellia came home for September 11th, ten years later. Thanks so much for the updates…always enjoy reading about these two’s travels.

Came to NBG from Michigan yesterday 9/08/11 and saw the male eage in the tree near the old nest. I have wanted to come since April…wish I could have seen NX or other eaglets today at Berkley but didn’t. At least now I can know what a beautiful home they have! Thank you for everything you do for these beautiful creatures!
I was hoping I could have met one of the moderators but no one seemed to be around when I was there.

Oh, today is the 13th…was there on the 12th…my how time slips away!! LOL
I notice that Azalea is along the bay near Kilmarnok. As of yesterday, her sister, NX, newly released NBG eagle from WCV is also in the same general vicinity!
Do eagles travel together? Would NX be following more experienced eagles? Do Eagles communicate?
