Azalea continued to wander around Northumberland County and on Thursday afternoon Sept 3 made a brief flight almost to the mouth of the Coan River near Lewisetta. Her afternoon flights along the shoreline are taking her out over the Potomac River which is in Maryland. On Sept 2 and 3 she spent time around both Hull Creek and another small stream just west of there. On the afternoon of Friday Sept 4 she flew back to the area just north of the Wicomico River near Blackwells where she spent the night and was still there at the time of this map early morning Sept 5.
Just in case you have not heard, both of the adult eagles were seen at their nest in Norfolk Botanical Garden this past week. Now we know for certain Azalea is not with either of her parents.

Since the adult eagles were seen back at the nest, does this mean that they have started adding to the nest for the next breeding season?
Also do you expect that Azalea will winter in the area that she is frequenting now or do you think she may migrate further away as winter approaches?
Margy – It is normal for adults to visit their nests during the off-season. We will likely see them again, but don’t expect them to do any nest repairing until November or December.
As for Azalea, we don’t know where she is going to wander too. That is why we put the satellite transmitter on her. None of the other 60 or so bald eagles that CCB has fitted with transmitters has used the same area in 2009 that Azalea is using now. I expect that we will find that she comes back here sometime during the winter months, but we will just have to wait and see.
