In May 2016 biologists with The Center for Conservation Biology banded and fitted GSM/GPS transmitters on 12 nestling Bald Eagles in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. One transmitter is no longer sending signals. Below is a map showing the current location as of Feb 1, 2017 (YELLOW CIRCLE) of 11 of the eagles, as well as a map showing their travels since fledging. Seven of the eagles are in Virginia Beach, two in North Carolina, one on the James River, and one on the Potomac River in Virginia. Click on maps to enlarge.

Thanks so much, Reese. Such great info here. I’m sure it took you a LONG time to compile it all.
Took about 12 hours.
Oh my ..this is just amazing .. well done Reese..Thank you..
Super to see where they are. It surprises me that so many of them are relatively close to home. Thanks much, Reese!
Thanks for all the time spent putting this together Reese! It was fun looking for them!
Thanks Reese for this fantastic information, that I just fould after reading Mary Reid’s column. We in Birdneck Point have been seeing 2 Juvs and 1 Adult Eagle quite a lot in the last few months. I just went to look for your mapped nest location but did not find a nest, I did see 2 Eagles though, one junenile was fishing in the bay’s west side of the neighborhood, caught a fish and the adult flew in and took it. They were coming from a tree on the other side of the bay from our neighborhood, in Linkhorn Park. Since I am a Wildlife Photographer, I would love to find this nest in order to document it, like I did with the CGLClub’s Ospreys that you banded 2 summers ago. My goal is promoting awareness of our local wildlife. My question is, since most all Eagle’s nests are in tall trees, how do the folks that put on the transmitters get up there to do it? Or is “our” and others of these nests lower and therefore more easy to get to, but harder for me to locate? I know that may be the case for Stumpy Lake and Red Wing.
Janet – The adult bald eagle you are seeing at Birdneck Point is likely from the nest in Linkhorn. That nest is on private property with restricted access. The nest is well documented. The juveniles can be from anywhere as they wander widely.
