The latest satellite data shows that Azalea has been in the Kings Grant section of Little Neck in Virginia Beach since Feb 10. It shows she has been visiting Witt Park on Kings Grant Rd opposite Blueridge Ct. A lot of ducks and geese gather on Kings Grant Lake there, so many in fact that the recent Virginia Beach Winter Wildlife Festival had a tour to Witt Park. The satellite data shows that Azalea has been there too. So, I went there after posting her location on this blog this morning.
She was right there!!. I saw her right after getting out of my car with only my binoculars, sitting on a branch maybe 150 ft away. I returned to my car, grabbed my camera and as I started back toward her she took off. These are not the best photos but in Photo 1 you can see the antenna. In photos 2, 3 and 4 you can see the bands on both legs, but the photos are not clear (500 lens, handheld).
I know the lady who owns the house on the corner of Blueridge Ct. Her husband and I started a Boy Scout Troop in 1974. Anyway, she and her sister saw Azalea yesterday, but not being birders had no idea it was an eagle, let alone a famous eagle – Azalea.

Reese, that is so exciting!! Congratulations for locating where she would be and getting the pics to prove it! I know this is a very metaphysical question, but is there any other evidence that young eagles return to their natal territory around egg laying time? Here both Camelia and Azalea seem to be showing up very near where they were hatched, around the time they were laid as eggs. Wonder if somehow the time and place are imprinted in them.
Response – Paula, I am not certain that there is a connection between their being here now and it being egg laying time. Last year this time Azalea was in North Carolina.
Oh Reese! I can only imagine the thrill it must have been to see her. She probably recognized you too! And, pictures to boot! Maybe she’ll visit your front/back yard yet.

Reese: These are wonderful pictures! It’s so interesting to see how different her coloration is already. I learn more and more each day from your eagle project and NBG. I’m a new eagle watcher; just came aboard last year after the babies had hatched. This year I’m getting to know how much work this project involves for all involved. I have joined the garden, given to the eagle cam and gave some Bucks To Buddy. I can’t think of a more worthy group! Thanks for all the pleasuree and knowledge you bring us!!!

Mr. Lukei, At 2pm today, 2-15, I saw a beautiful
young eagle soaring blissfully over the intersection of VB Blvd and Great Neck Rd. MADE MY DAY. Cannot wait for the next update of the tracking of your eagles to determine whether it was Azalea or Camellia. Thanks so much for the pictures and all that you do.
I introduced my 4 yr old grandson in NOVA to the Eagle Cam on Sunday, and he asked if he could take my laptop to school to show his friends. No, but I guess now I should buy him a computer so he can watch the nest, too.
Response – Mimi – I think Camellia has flown back north, But I will check to see just where Azalea was at 2Pm today. She was still in Little Neck this morning.

I saw Cammellia this morning at 7AM I saw him perching in my back yard on the dam separating lake from River for the last few days, but didn’t see the antenna until this morning.
Oh my gosh – I am sitting here with tears flowing down my cheeks. How absolutely wonderful to see our diva again! I am so thrilled that YOU were the one to see her and get her pictures. Reese she has been looking for you for a couple years and finally you two connected. She is so smart and finally has learned to pluck feathers – something we wondered about a while back.
