Grace took advantage of the north winds this past week and has flown back to North Carolina. On Jan 7 she was just a few miles into Virginia on the Eastern Shore near the small village of Mears, VA (YELLOW arrow). She began moving south on Jan 8 and on Jan 12 was near Eastville, VA (GREEN pointer). She hung around the southern section of Eastern Shore until the morning of Jan 13 when she crossed the mouth of Chesapeake Bay and came ashore at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel at Noon Jan 13 (LIGHT BLUE pointer). She continued south across Virginia Beach over Lake Smith and Honey Bee Golf Course about 1:30pm, then Fentress in Chesapeake. She crossed into North Carolina in Currituck County near Moyock at 3:00pm (ORANGE pointer). As of this satellite map Grace is on the Big Flatty Creek in Pasquotank County – WHITE arrow Jan 17 at 3:00pm. The red line on the map shows a straight-line distance of 121 miles from Mears, VA to the Big Flatty Creek. Notice that Grace did not visit her natal home nest at Saw Pen Point in Virginia Beach flying over Lake Smith to the west instead. Click on maps to enlarge.

Thanks for the update. Glad to see her checking in.
Of all the days I visit Honeybee, the 13th was not one of them! Thanks for the update Reese!
Interesting. Now we’ll see if she goes further south. I waved to her as she flew over – hahaha!
Response – Next week I am betting Grace will be back at the Plymouth catfish farm!!!
Aw, – great news with respect to her going south to find relief from the cold! Winters can be harsh with ice covered streams. What a smart girl! I’ll feel better when she is at the cat fish farms, too. Thanks Reese!
