Camellia was hatched March 11, 2010 at Norfolk Botanical Garden, 3 years and 5 months ago from today. He has changed in appearance significantly. Below is his photo taken on March 31, 2010 when he was banded as Purple NC (photo Reese F Lukei Jr). Despite eluding most of us most of the time since then, he is ocassionally caught on camera by local photographers. The most recent was on August 9 at 8:17am at Kemps Lake in Virginia Beach (PURPLE pointer) by Jim Yanello as Camellia was in flight. You can clearly see the satellite transmitter in Jim’s photo, and look at the white head and tail feathers. Camellia is growing up!!
So, where has Camellia been for the past three days. Visiting places with which he is familiar – Lake Smith, Kemps Lake, Elizabeth River, and Brown Cove on the Lynnhaven River – all in Virginia Beach, VA. Here are his data points – YELLOW arrow Aug 7 at 6:00pm, PINK pointer Aug 8 at 7:00am, GREEN pointer Aug 9 at 1:00am, PURPLE pointer Aug 9 at 8:00am (Kemps Lake), BLUE pointer Aug 9 at Noon (Brown Cove – Great Neck Estates), ORANGE pointer Aug 10 at 1:00am, and as of this satellite map Aug 10 at 5:00am. Cam, we are so glad you seem to have some favorite hang outs which helps us find you on occasions. You are looking great in your formal attire – soon to be dress whites! Be careful amidst the congestion!
Many thanks to Jim Yanello for sharing these great images with us! (Yay!) Reese, thanks!
