Azalea stayed in the Cromwell neighborhood in Norfolk until late morning Dec 1 (YELLOW arrow Nov 30 at 3:00pm and PINK pointer Dec 1 at 1:00am). She then flew east to Witchduck in Va Beach on the Lynnhaven River (BLUE pointer Dec 2 at 1:00am). From there she flew a short distance to Little neck and was at the northern end of Kings Grant Lake (PURPLE pointer Dec 3 at 1:00am). At 10:00am Dec 3 (WHITE pin) I was lucky enough to get photos of AZALEA just off Kings Grant Road (no idea she was there – just luck! – my present to all our eagletrak fans). There is more great news. At the same time I was getting photos of Azalea, Cary L was at Honeybee Golf Course about 10 miles away capturing photos of HK (Azalea’s brother) and a second purple banded eagle in the same frame!! Cary will post her photos later. Azalea left Kings Grant about 1:00pm and flew to Stumpy Lake (WHITE arrow Dec 3 at 6:00pm).
Here is the link to Cary’s photos – https://picasaweb.google.com/105690810447914673239/2011_12_03HoneyBeePurpleBand?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWU8dD4ssmg_AE#

Reese, I hope you had a great Birthday! I have yet another “Eagle mania” question: Are the purple bands specific to eagles banded in the Chesapeake Bay area of Virginia, or just to CCB or NBG banded eagles? How many eagles are banded per year in Virginia? Thanks, and have a great birthday week!
Response – The number of bald eagles banded varies from none to 30 or more depending on the scheduling of projects and funding. Size number 9 purple bands are used to identify eagles banded in the Chesapeake Bay region. CCB has banded about 60 in Maryland.
