After spending a couple weeks flying all round the Smith Point area of Northumberland County, VA, Azalea seems to have taken the day off and settled down in a patch of woods west of Ophelia, VA. She left the Chesapeake Bay shore about 7:00pm Sept 28 and spent the night off Harbour View Dr (YELLOW pointer 1:00am 9/29). She spent the day Sept 29 flying about the western reaches of the Little Wicomico River in the area that NX has been visiting (www.wildlifecenter.org). Azalea then flew to a section of woods east of Gonyon Rd and stayed overnight (GREEN pointer 1:00am Sept 30). Azalea stayed right there all day Sept 30 and that is where she is at 7:00pm Sept 30 – WHITE arrow. Click Maps to enlarge.

Thanks for the update today! Is there the technology available to outfit an eagle with sound and video? Imagine what we coud learn from their travels if you could both see and hear what is going on.
Response – Such technology does exist but very expensive. Winged Migration is a video in which it was used.
So good to see that Azalea is contented to stay near by and glean the best our area has for her. Isn’t it amazing that she wishes to be here the same time NX is about and around the same areas? If they come here every fall can we conclude they come for some reason or just for a drop-in visit.? So wonderful to have them.
Reece What is special here that they want to come each fall to the same place in this Neck? Thanks, Linda
Response – Azalea and NX are not alone. This week I was sent photos of two other eagles in the same area, and I expect there are others. Fishing must be good up there!! – Reese
You mention fishing must be good up there, I can under stand Azalea knows some good fishing place, but how does NX know this is a good fishing area? Instint?
Response – Watching where other eagles go to forage. Remember they have excellent eye sight and when soaring can see a great distance, so can see where other eagles congregate.
